Private investigator Heath Jones’s job is to bring bastards to justice. This time it’s personal. He knew the Copper Killer’s latest victim so when her sister asks for his help, he’s all in. She swallowed and met his gaze. “All right. Let me get this straight. We’re going undercover to flush out a killer who’s obsessed with me, and you’re offering to play at being my man for real with no strings or future?” She hoisted the bag onto her shoulder. “That’s some ego. Are you that good in bed?”
“Yes.” And that was definite interest in her eyes.
She clicked her tongue. “I’ll keep your offer in mind.”
“You do that.” He maintained a low and calm voice. “While you’re considering, let’s look at the situation. You have publicly made me your fiancé in order to draw out a killer, which means I have to act as such. Any halfway intelligent law enforcement officer or private investigator would keep his redheaded fiancée very close after the stunt you just pulled. If you’re not with me, the killer is going to be very suspicious.”
She stilled, expressions crossing her face rapidly. “That’s a good point,” she said slowly.
Yeah. Sometimes reality helped him out a little. Plus, the killer had a hard-on for her, and he must already have plans to take her at some point. She’d just upped the timeline. “In addition, you need protection around the clock now, and I’m willing to provide that. So while you’re keeping my offer in mind, we’ll be staying in the same hotel room or same apartment.” He made sure he had her full attention. “While we plan the wedding, of course.”
Her challenging smile thrilled something inside him. “That’s fair.”
He stepped back to give her some space. “Good. Are you ready?”
“Yes.” She looked around the room. “I do have to ask. What if I didn’t agree with you about your keeping secrets from me? Considering people shoot at you, and I’m going to be at your side, it seems fair that you tell me who these people are.” She cocked her head to the side and focused back on him.
“I have more immediate concerns than being fair,” he said smoothly. “You brought me into this mess.”
A frown drew down her eyebrows. “Listen. I want an answer about you.”
“I just gave you one.” At her mulish expression, he searched for better words that wouldn’t end in an argument.
Suddenly, the door blew wide open and bounced loudly off the table. “Anya!” he yelled, jumping for her.
Heath Jones is a natural born protector and defender of the weak; whether it’s an injured animal or an abused human, he will put himself on the line to ensure the safety of those that cannot protect themselves. That’s why the Copper Killer case has him tied in knots and determined to solve it before another innocent woman can be brutalized and killed. When friend and FBI Agent Loretta Jackson goes missing after setting herself up as bait for the psycho, Heath knows he has to step up his game and end this.
Anya Best has to find her sister before it is too late; after all, it is her fault Loretta was taken. Anya called her when she started receiving disturbing letters and pictures, and if she hadn’t, then Loretta would never have taken the case and would still be with her. When the worst happens, Anya decides it’s time to take matters into her own hands, but she does it in a way that exposes Heath to national media attention with absolutely no thought or knowledge of the consequences it can have for Heath and his brothers.
To say that the Jones boys are monumentally unhappy would be an understatement, but Ryker and Denver know that Heath is going to go all in to save the woman who just painted a huge bulls-eye on them as well as herself. It goes without saying that she fires every protective instinct the man possesses, but the undeniable attraction between them is completely unexpected for him. Anya challenges Heath at every turn, but the more he sees the more he is drawn to her beauty, wit and intelligence equally. Spending time in close proximity is a serious threat to his carefully maintained control, particularly since the woman seems hell bent on pushing him to his breaking point.
Anya sees the wildness lurking beneath the surface and wants him to trust her enough to let himself go completely just once- but does she know what she is asking? The UST continues to build until Heath has finally had all he can take, but even then he is determined to treat her as if she is breakable which just urges her to push him harder. Heath knows if he lets her in on the secrets he and his brothers are hiding, it will make her a target and a personal weakness but he isn’t sure he can just walk away after they catch the killer either.
And little do they know that killer is closer to home than they ever could have imagined! I loved how Ms. Zanetti tied together the boys’ past with their present on so many different levels, and the suspense had me biting my nails and wildly flipping the pages trying to figure it all out right up until the big reveal. Anya and Heath were great together, and I loved how Ryker, Denver and Zara immediately folded her into their little family as they comprehended how much she meant to Heath even before he was willing to admit it to himself. And when Heath’s dominant side comes out to play… WHEW! Get the fans out ladies!
The past makes its inevitable appearance, and the crescendo toward a final showdown is building. Before they can get there though, Denver has to face his more recent past and the woman he walked away from for her own safety. She just took steps to reach out to him that inadvertently put her in a glaring spotlight from Dr. Madison, and the stage is set for his story Twisted Truths. Did I mention I can’t wait to see how it all turns out?
