Working the night shift at a five-star hotel in downtown Los Angeles, I get my fair share of weirdos. But none of them prepared me for the night I met Bolt. He saved my life.
Now, he’s my super hero, the hunk I’m yearning to thank in more creative ways than a damn kiss on the cheek. Too bad he’s actually Reece Richards, my full-on nerd of a real-life boss.
He’s got some commitment issues thanks to his evil ex and global empire and from having to save the city from a maniac out to destroy everything he loves.
But there’s something that just may interfere with all those plans. My heart.
If you enjoy the fantasy world of super heroes, Misadventures with a Super Hero should have a little bit of everything you love. There’s the enigmatic global playboy millionaire who is turned into something more against his will, the evil but beautiful psychotic ex who is backed by the bad guys called The Consortium, a beautiful if somewhat oblivious damsel who captures his heart, and lots of hot and steamy sex.
Since Reece’s enhancement occurred, he has tried to keep to himself because his new aura freaks people out. When he meets Emma for the first time, she is definitely affected but not in a negative way like most others. He may be able to manipulate magnetic fields and electricity but no manipulation is required to inexplicably pull her to him and it doesn’t take long before sparks are flying both literally and figuratively! When she can actually get her brain back online after having her circuits fried by multiple O’s, she worries about the fact that Reece is her boss but he makes sure to reapply his magic fingers and other body parts to distract her before she can get too far down that path.
In the meantime the whole city is enthralled with the escapades of their new hero Bolt who takes down the baddies with mind bending capabilities, so when he suddenly disappears from their radar everyone wonders where he went – including Emma’s coworkers who are just as taken by his mystique and have idea that Bolt is actually their boss. Did I mention that Emma was slightly oblivious too? Yeah, anyway… before long the aforementioned psycho ex is back looking to cause more mayhem and create waves with the new love of Reece’s life leading up to the expected conclusion.
If you have followed me for a while you know I am usually a big fan of Ms. Payne’s books. She writes some seriously hot stories surrounded by some great plots and characters, and perhaps that was my issue with this story. I don’t mind a great super hero story, but this one felt like one really big and extended sex scene with a little bit of plot thrown in rather than the other way around. And perhaps it was just my frame of mind as I was reading the book that had me feeling a little ambivalent about it because even as I typed that last sentence, I am thinking to myself “and your problem here is what exactly?” All in all I thought Misadventures with a Super Hero was a good escapist read but it was just missing that little bit of magic that normally tips the scales solidly into the “great” category for me.
