Synopsis:

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Whoever coined that phrase is a bald-faced liar. Words are often the sharpest weapon of all, triggering some of the most powerful emotions a human can experience.

“You’re pregnant.”

“It’s a boy.”

“Your son needs a heart transplant.”

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.

Lies.

Syllables and letters may not be tangible, but they can still destroy your entire life faster than a bullet from a gun.

Two words—that was all it took to extinguish the sun from my sky.

“He’s gone.”

For ten years, the darkness consumed me.

In the end, it was four deep, gravelly words that gave me hope of another sunrise.

“Hi. I’m Porter Reese.”

KIM’S REVIEW

I had a feeling I was going to have to brace going into this book and I was right! Aly Martinez has written another emotionally charged enthralling story that just pulled me in from the start and threw a few sucker punches my way too.

Charlotte has been living in the darkness for 10 years after suffering a devastating loss that she cannot move past. Really she stopped living that day and has become a master of emotional detachment and deflection most of the time. Children have the ability to bring her to her knees in an instant in certain circumstances though, so although she is the top physician in the area in her specialty she absolutely refuses to treat children- no exceptions.

Porter is a single dad after his wife’s death a few years ago, and it is breaking his heart to watch his son Travis struggle with his health issues. Charlotte’s name constantly arises as the top doctor who can potentially help him, so he decides to pull out all the stops to try to convince her to make an exception to treat Travis. From the very first time they meet, it is clear to him that Charlotte carries the same darkness within her that he has been struggling with for years. They share a connection that causes Porter to forget about asking to be added to her client list momentarily in favor of just trying to get to know her instead.

When they are together, the rest of the world and that darkness recedes just a bit as they enjoy each other’s company on their terms: no questions, no judgment, no faking it and no apologies. The walls come down and they can share their pain and sadness, but when the details of their pasts are revealed to each other, it’s clear they have a very uphill journey ahead of them if they want to try to share a future.

Both Charlotte and Porter have to find ways to forgive themselves for their roles in the tragedies of their pasts and accept that forgiveness and miving forward do not equal forgetfulness. Just when they are making some progress they are thrown for a loop or two that have me salivating to get my grubby little paws on the second half of this story- I can’t wait to see how it all works out!

AUTHOR INFORMATION:

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
