An alpha male is not for me. Probably. Well, maybe. No, definitely. But he’s just so sexy. – April
Oh April, you have no idea what kind of ride you are about to take!
Since losing her husband and then her daughter to Scorpius, April has become pretty numb and a bit jaded. She has lost everyone she loves, so while she doesn’t necessarily have a death wish, she isn’t particularly worried about dying either. When Jax approaches her with a request to work with Damon, one of the new Merc residents in Vanguard territory, to infiltrate the group calling themselves the Pure, she agrees with the thought that she has nothing to lose.
Since neither Damon nor April has been infected with Scorpius yet, they are prime recruits for the secretive group who may just be a cult or holding people against their will within Vanguard territory. Damon is former SWAT so Jax is betting that the Pure will go through April to try to get to Damon if they appear to be dating. She is far from sure her acting skills are up to the task but she agrees anyway. When Damon starts playing the part a little too convincingly in her eyes, she is adorably confused.
Damon starts off having fun flirting with the sexy, sweet and smart Vanguard woman who doesn’t see herself very clearly, but what was supposed to be just casual fun never really meets that definition for either of them. Damon is the calm, steady, and collected one, but she can make him lose his cool with her determination to push his buttons. He may be even tempered most of the time but that man is still alpha! When it becomes obvious Damon is not interested in pretending to be into her and that she is not as immune to his charms as she wants to be, April has to make a decision. She is nowhere near as experienced as he seems to be so she can’t quite fathom his interest in her, but she can’t honestly say she is sure she cares either. She just has to decide if taking a chance on living again is worth risking her heart in a time when tomorrow is never guaranteed.
Damon may just be my new favorite hero of this series! He is a wonderful combination of calm strength and alpha traits that just worked for me in a big way. He is the quiet second in command to Greyson, a steady and loyal friend to all who earn his trust, and eventually he is the catalyst and ultimate voice of reason who smoothes the transition and integration of the Mercs into Vanguard.
Of course chaos still surrounds both Damon and April. As they get a closer look inside the Pure, people are saying all the right things but something just feels off. Jax and his lieutenants are still looking for more Bunkers as they unravel the secrets of the one they were able to locate and seize, but they are in a race against the clock and the President himself who continues to fund the Twenty gang to attack Vanguard at every opportunity to weaken their defenses. They also need to find a way to focus on finding resources and possibly finding a new location to the north that will support the survivors under Jax’s protection. Oh and it soon becomes apparent there is a traitor in their midst too…because they need one more challenge!
Every time I think this author cannot possibly top the last story I read, she proves me wrong with her next book! I highly recommend Winter Igniting and the Scorpius Syndrome series as a whole for anyone who loves alpha males and strong female characters and who enjoy a post-apocalyptic setting. I just finished this story and I am already looking forward to Marcus’s story in Knight Awakening. Both he and little Lena intrigue me, and I have a feeling both their secrets will have a big impact on the story arc of the, series when the time is right. I will be eagerly waiting to find out if that is true!

SCORPIUS RISING by Rebecca Zanetti
For Nora Medina it started when she was yanked off a gorgeous Hawaiian beach, still in her bikini top, and onto her ex-husband’s government jet. A microbiologist doesn’t see a lot of emergency extractions, but marriage to Deacan Devlin McDougall taught her plenty about adrenaline. Nora knows it’s more than their unfinished business that has brought the sexy, maddening Scot back into her life. But she’d never have guessed this.
As a soldier of fortune, Deke has seen too much by any standards. But the terrifying bacterium sneaking through the highest halls of power isn’t his kind of battle. All he can do is keep close to his brilliant, fiery Nora and fight like hell to keep her safe. Because if he lets her get sucked down by the horror that’s coming, he’ll never get another chance at her heart . . .
With nothing but rumors to lead her, Lynn Harmony has trekked across a nightmare landscape to find one man—a mysterious, damaged legend who protects the weak and leads the strong. He’s more than muscle and firepower—and in post-plague L.A., he’s her only hope. As the one woman who could cure the disease, Lynn is the single most volatile—and vulnerable—creature in this new and ruthless world. But face to face with Jax Mercury…
Danger has never looked quite so delicious…
Before the Scorpius Syndrome tore through North America and nearly wiped out the population, Vivienne Wellington was the FBI’s best profiler. The bacteria got her anyway. But she survived. She recovered. And when she woke up from a drug-nightmare of captivity, her skills as a hunter of men had gone from merely brilliant to full-on uncanny. Her mysterious rescuer wants her to put them to the test. But no matter how tempting he is, with his angel’s eyes and devil’s tongue, Vinnie knows she shouldn’t trust him.
If the FBI were still around they would rate Raze Shadow as one of the bad guys. His military training can’t wipe out his association with the Mercenaries, the most feared gang in a thousand miles. His loyalties are compromised. He won’t even tell Vinnie his real name. But there’s no FBI in the new America of fear and firepower, only instinct and risk. And the way his arms wrap around her tells its own story. Whatever else Raze is concealing, he can’t hide his desire . . .
Before surviving the Scorpius bacterium, Tace Justice was a good ole Texas cowboy who served his country and loved his mama. After Scorpius, the world became dark, dangerous, and deadly… and so did he. The Vanguard medic is stronger, faster, and smarter than before, but he’s lost the line between right and wrong. His passion is absolute, and when he focuses it on one woman, there’s no turning back for either of them.
Sami Steel has been fighting to survive right alongside Tace, convincing the Vanguard soldiers she’s one of them. In truth, Sami is a former hacker turned government agent who worked at The Bunker, where scientists stored both contaminants and cures. Only she knows the location, and she’s not telling. Yet when sexual fire explodes between her and Tace, she’ll face even that hell again to save him.
Even before surviving the Scorpius bacterium, Greyson Storm was a lone wolf navigating minefields. As a kid, he learned to take a hit and find safety. As an adult, he joined the military and quickly learned how to protect and defend. When the world ended, he created a mercenary camp with military precision, no entanglements, and a promise to avenge a fallen friend. As part of that vow, he kidnapped Maureen Shadow, but now that he has let her go, her blue eyes and intriguing mind keep haunting him…
As possibly the only Biotechnology Engineer still living, Maureen Shadow might be humanity’s one hope to survive the aftermath of Scorpius, making her frighteningly valuable to both allies and enemies. Even after sexual tension explodes with Greyson, she’s not sure which camp he belongs to—friend or foe? Worse yet, survival may mean thwarting his prime mission, putting her in even more peril. When danger and seduction collide, there is no safety in this new world.
Hugh Johnson is nobody’s hero, and the idea of being in the limelight makes him want to growl. He takes care of his brothers, does his job, and enjoys a mellow evening hanging with his hound dog and watching the sports channel. So when sweet and sexy Ellie Smithers from his college chemistry class asks him to save millions of people from a nuclear meltdown, he doggedly steps forward while telling himself that the world hasn’t changed and he can go back to his relaxing life. One look at Ellie and excitement doesn’t seem so bad.
Eleanor Smithers knows that the Scorpius bacteria has and will change life as we know it, but that’s a concern for another day. She’s been hand-picked as the computer guru for The Brigade, which is the USA’s first line of defense against all things Scorpius, including homegrown terrorists who’ve just been waiting for a chance to strike. Their target is a nuclear power plant in the east, and the only person who can help her is Hugh, the sexy, laconic, dangerous man she had a crush on so long ago.
